From crafting knitwear at Missoni to selling her creations worldwide, Liverpool-born designer Kay Bolderson has an influential education to thank for her career success. “GCSEs, A Levels, Art Foundation, Degree and then Postgraduate study, my own design background is totally text book!” Bolderson explains. “I realised that I wanted to work in design when Art became my favourite subject. It was through my education that I recognised I could make a living with these skills.”
Bolderson’s talents were further honed from this point onwards by the study of a Masters in Fashion Knitwear at London’s notorious Art and Design College, Central Saint Martins: “Being an Alumni of CSM is very special. The whole experience of studying in London, meeting key industry designers and having studio space in such a creative environment was both challenging and exciting,” Bolderson tells me. Returning from Milan to teach Textile Studies at the University of Derby, Bolderson now seeks to inspire a new generation of fresh young designers.
“I continue to draw on my educational experiences and use them to encourage and inform my own students today,” the enthusiastic designer continues. In the role of Senior Lecturer of Textile Studies, Bolderson is uniquely placed to pass on her invaluable insight into an infamously hard-hitting industry.
“I constantly tell my students that you have to be passionate and crazy about your subject and not to take knock backs personally,” Bolderson explains. “Above all, you have to remember you are doing something that you love and in reality, what could be better?”
