In 2017, we mark 25 years since the Los Angeles riots incited by the acquittal of the police officers responsible for the brutal beating of Rodney King. For many, however, time seems to be standing still, as they remain the victims of racial-based violence, profiling, and police brutality. Bodies of black American men still fall, hitting the ground of America with the unbearable weight of a saddening metaphor: they still embody the unalienable inhumanity of society, its darkest demons, its desire to destroy and cast away.

Preserving life should not be a cause of protest. And yet, we need to fight to affirm the most basic facts of humanity.
