"The body will draw to itself the intentional threads which bind it to its surroundings and finally will reveal to us the perceiving subject as the perceived world.” - Maurice Merleau Ponty

‘As Meaning’ investigates the relationship between people and their surroundings specifically relating to the phenomenological philosophy of Maurice Merleau Ponty.

The story explores the concept of ambiguous intertwining between the inner self and the outside world in the sense that we are both a part of the world and coextensive with it. Our perceived view of our surroundings cannot be objective as it is conditioned by various factors which results in the inside and the outside being inseparable. "The world is wholly inside and I am wholly outside myself".

As we tacitly experience the world around us we subjectively interpret our environment as a reflection of the objects in it and the objects as a reflection of that specific environment. Therefore exists an interdependence where the objects surrounding us are at once influenced by us as we are influenced by them. Through a combination of pose, costume and performance the shoot's protagonist engages theatrically with an armchair and the boundary between the model and the armchair, the inner and the outer, becomes uncertain.
